gotta have god
i teach a group of 5th and 6th graders on wednesday nights. we usually have about 40 children in my group. we have a 25 minute counsel time and this is where this book comes in handy. they relate to the stories i read them, to what happens in their life everyday. it gives my class a chance to see Gods way of handling the trying days of growing up. what a great way to help my class learn about God and try to live life with him in their life.

Grant's Getaways: Outdoor Adventures with Oregon's Grant McOmie
Published in Paperback by WestWinds Press (April, 2001)
Authors: Grant McOmie and Steve Terrill
Average review score:

A Fantastic Travel Companion
I bought this book the first day it came out! Terrill's pictures ALONE are a great reason to have this gem. But Grant's description of the various "getaways" are delightful as well. He makes me want to get out there and explore! I didn't even know half of these places existed!

I am VERY satisfied with this book and recommend it highly.

Great Vacations in Oregon & Washington; A Travel Writer's Favorite Vacation Getaways

Loved getting the inside scoop straight from the author!
This is a very different kind of travel book--and it happens to be one we enjoyed immensely on a week-long trip to eastern Oregon. Instead of a straight listing of sights to see, the author has selected her favorite areas and they come with plenty of recommended things to do and places to stay. It's rather like having a chance to sit down and ask a well-known travel writer to give the inside scoop on the very best locations. We hiked the high Wallowas and drove through Leslie Gulch, discovering fascinating places we never knew existed. We found this book to be inspiring and well-researched. The author has obviously spent time in these locations and this is a refreshing change from ordinary travel books that simply offer a list of attractions without help in putting together a vacation that is filled with a variety of great adventures.

Greetings from Washington
Published in Hardcover by Graphic Arts Center Publishing Co. (October, 1988)
Author: Lane Morgan

A Postcard View of Washington State History!
This 1988 collection of historical tinted postcards, assembled by a renowned local author and historian, was timed just right for the Washington State Centennial in 1989. It's now a collector's item for both Pacific Northwest history buffs and postcard collectors.

The sections, with only captions and brief comments by Lane Morgan, are named: "From Sea to Inland Sea," "Seattle," "West of the Mountains," "Cascades," "Inland Empire," "Farm and Forest," and "Celebrations."

Since the elementary school where I am a librarian is located in a community originally established for the logging industry, students are always fascinated to see size of the logs, and even the lumber cut from those logs, as well as log cabins, oxen on a skid road, and log jams in the rivers. They are amazed to see a family's home built out of a single tree stump around 1910!

Other fascinating postcards include the native people, both the coastal and the inland tribes. Granted, this is a nostalgic look at Washington State, with early camping and skiing on Mount Rainier, irrigated orchards in Wenatchee Valley, the beloved "Kalakala" ferry boat on Puget Sound, and historic buildings, including the "highest and finest and best known office building on the Pacific Coast," the Smith Tower in Seattle.

While it may not seem like "history" to me, I remember as a 12 year-old in 1962 collecting the postcards shown here from the Century 21 Exposition, better known as the Seattle World's Fair, with painted views of the Space Needle and the Monorail.

This is a fun book to have for lovers of local history and nostalgia. This is one of those books that proves the old proverb, "A picture is worth a thousand words." It would be nice to see it back in print, but I imagine someone will come out with a new, updated version...perhaps in time for our bi-centennial in 2089!

The Griots Cookbook: Rare and Well-Done
Published in Paperback by Mary Carter Smith (March, 1986)
Authors: Alice McGill, Mary Carter Smith, and Elmira Washington
Average review score:

African-American Contributed Cookbook
I do not own this cookbook, but used a copy in the library of the Boston Children's Museum in researching my own _The American Ethnic Cookbook for Students_. The Griots Cookbook was originally done as a fundraiser for the student radio station at Morgan State, a historicallym black college in Maryland. The recipes come from the families of the three co-authors, and from students including some contemporary African recipes as well as soul-food classics.

The recipes are credited to individuals, and have some individual eccentricities, as well as being very representative of that era and region.

If you can find a copy to buy, you will be very pleased with this cookbook, which is both usable and collectable.

Gunkholing in the San Juan Islands
Published in Paperback by San Juan Enterprises, Inc. (01 January, 2000)
Authors: Jo Bailey and Carl Nyberg
Average review score:

Gunkholing very comprehensive
This new edition has the local information I was looking for. It has detailed information on anchorages, local marinas - with contact information - local people, history, and lots of pictures of where you may be planning to go. It is informative on a number of related subjects, and was very entertaining. A must for anyone planning to cruse in the San Juan Islands. It's my most used book on the subject.
